Cox Cares: Dealertrack Canada gives back to homeless youth shelter

As part of Cox Automotive Canada’s ‘Cox Cares’ Corporate Social Responsibility program, the Dealertrack Canada Engineering department partnered up with Toronto’s Youth Without Shelter to plan, shop, prepare and donate four gourmet meals for their 53 teenage residents in March, 2017.

Youth Without Shelter is an emergency residence dedicated to providing shelter and support programs for homeless youth 16 to 24 years of age. The Shelter’s programs enable youth to live responsibly and independent in society. This event was part of the broader Cox Cares Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program with Dealertrack Engineering teams fostering collaboration and interaction within the department.

The event was also a labour of love for the Dealertrack team. In the words of one of the software engineers, this project was like a regular day at the office: “Start with a story, add a bit of code, and sprinkle some functional tests (to taste). Mix well. Then pour into production – slowly.”

Over the two-day event, 30 volunteers each day prepared 90 bagged lunches; eight line cooks prepared a hot breakfast — including 130 pancakes mixed and flipped with 0 flops!; and eight dinner chefs made an Indian-style dinner with butter chicken and paneer, tandoori vegetables, naan and homemade desserts on the menu. As well, a fundraising team raised $1,070, including $300 donated by Dealertrack Canada.

In the end, the efforts were greatly appreciated by Youth Without Shelter, and the Dealertrack Canada team look forward to helping again.

We have a responsibility to each other and to our communities to serve others. In 2016, Cox Automotive Canada launched Cox Cares to serve as the cornerstone of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in Canada.
